Hailed as an pioneer - eventually, Gary Numan was the first to fuse electronic music with rock successfully as a pop vehicle. (Much to the chargrin of the yet to be famous Human League - who were then, touted as THE electronic band of the late 70`s who were going to breakthrough to the Top 40) Offically called the Touring Principle and supported by Orchestral manoeuvres in the dark - this was a busy and commercially fruitful period. He had just disbanded Tubeway army the same year, and for this album - his first solo effort - he avoided using guitars.

If you want more information on this tour, got to the link "THE TOURING PRINCIPLE" below, there`s everything from backstage photos, to interviews, programmes, equipment list and so on, it is nothing short of amazing. I`d would recommend that you look through the site as you listen to the concert, gives you a real feel of what was like behind the scenes.

The Neon bars and the radio controlled pryamids are just mint. Would never get them into my living room though. The lavish concerts and the spending on planes and fast cars meant that by the end of the 80`s he was broke. But now he`s back on his feet, and his publishing side of the business is healthy, with request coming in every week or so to use `cars` according to a rather odd interview he gave the telegraph about his financial affairs.

Documentary / Musical Youth (1982 - Only transmitted once)

Documentary / Musical Youth (1982 - Only transmitted once)

You`ll have to be of an certain age to really dig this. A couple of lads from Birmingham and a determined father set out to form a successful band. This was back in the Early eighties, amid the grim backdrop of a recession they hit a chord with kids of all colours and managed to reach the top spot with a song about smoking weed - even though all but one were still in school. For those who are not familiar with Musical youth, that short description might lead you to think that they were some novelty band, which they weren`t. Well, they might have been seen as novelty by some: black kids playing reggae but, especially to us from the midlands - the county where the band come from - they represented fun, youth, and pride (this is WAY before we all got post-modern)

This is was filmed in 1982, and was aired only once with a few copies given out to people who appeared in the programme. It`s a great piece of 80`s TV, and even though there has been documentaries made since that tell a more up-to-date story of the band, this s still enjoyable. The band saw a fair share of tragedy, an early death and one band member becoming mentally ill - this doc, for obvious reasons has none of it, simply as it hadn`t happened yet - which leaves you with 45 minutes of five young lads experiencing the world through innocent eyes.

They travel to Jamaica in this film, the island of their parents birth, for the very first time and we hear their thoughts on the differences between Birmingham and San Antonio (a parish in Jamaica) and how they feel about it

You`ll also you get to hear little snippets of dub versions of their songs - which I haven`t heard since the time of the original 12" releases.

Documentary / The Great Ticket Scandal - How music and sport lovers get ripped off

Documentary / The Great Ticket Scandal - How music and sport lovers get ripped off

Ever wondered why getting tickets to a big event is such a struggle? You hear about a band`s tour, you get excited, then you try and book the tickets on the day but you never get your hands on any, and in the end you pay high prices for the same event through a third party. Or, you`ll see the prices and and think "um, no thanks".

There are various reasons why going to gigs has become as expensive as a short break to Europe (I`m in the UK) but the main one has to to do with resellers. They buy up tickets as soon as the box office opens or have previously agreed allocation, then within minutes, offer them on sale for many times the face value.

This practice is distorting the market, pricing out fans, and making it difficult for traditional outlets like record shops, who end up with sod all allocations themselves.

Why this happens, and who is behind these practises is explained in this Dispatches Documentary.

Hide your record collection, Here comes The Unknown Stuntman

Hide your record collection, Here comes The Unknown Stuntman

Armed with only a sampler, this guy has been terrorising the music world, breaking into people`s record collections, stealing the best the best bits, putting the end results onto the black market and then laughing as the public lap it up. He`s managed to get featured on 6 music with radio support from Zane Lowe to John Peel - now that is a sentence a lot of other musicians would love to have ascribed to them - not bad eh?

His sound is best described as a collage of many genres, but coming together to make one, using samples as arrangement rather than entertainment. ("See how clever I was mashing seven nation army with the theme to dads army?" does not apply here.) The sample heavy "The best of ... Everyone else" album featured below is very much as far away as you can get from that genre of ham fisted use of other peoples work. It hip hops all over the shop - only pausing the head bouncing for the cinematic "The Mailman" which got itself airplay on BBC 6music. It hints at more thoughtful, pastoral side to his music making than say "2000 kilos of Christ"

He also has a knack for titles too, you noticed yet?

On his remixes however, he favours the production side of things taking more of a front seat to the sampling, "Two headed boy" has more of a pure, clinical aesthetic to it - which is not something you hear on his current album. Talking of production, he`s been working with Billy Ray Martin (Yeah, electribe 101) and the results are out next week, and I`m very intrigued to find out just what they`ve done together. Not many women posses a voice that sounds so seductive - even over an electronic beat with no sexual lyrics.... not like Billy Ray. (Listen to "Your Loving Arms")

Another source of interest is that the mask never comes off. I haven`t a ******** clue who he is. I just hope he`s not my college jazz tutor, or my landlord. (one has a porn tache - the other, very little taste) We live in the same small city, and as musicians we`ve more than likely crossed paths over the years (cue twilight zone scary music) .. but fuck it - it`s been ages in music since we`ve had an element of mystery around an identity. Even Rupert Murdoch doesn`t even know ... and he`s fucking Australian!

So What`s up today is a mish mash of his works so far, there`s much more stuff out there that he`s done, but in the interest of keeping the page load time to a minimum - I`ll have to leave you wanting more - But... I`ve left you lot some links so you can get it for yourself.

On a more personal note, He`s had to go into hospital recently (due to a bong/gas mask accident) and is currently getting some well earned recovery time at home, so get well soon fella. (Or as we say in leeds "you lazy cunt, get out of bed and get back behind your mixing desk")

REMIX / "Rolling in the Deep (Punk Rock Kick Uptempo Soul Cut)" - Adele

REMIX / "Rolling in the Deep (Punk Rock Kick Uptempo Soul Cut)" - Adele

She had a good time at the Grammys and the Brits - a few awards and that, probably a good time to drop this track that I did last year.

This was supposed to be on the `Northern soul All stars" mixtape from last year, but got cut out at the last minute. It would`ve stayed unheard but there was something i like about it - so I put it out on it`s own on a whim and everyone liked it. Cush!

So, it`s not a remix, it`s a mash.. but as I`m keeping the other tune involved secret. A little bit of editing here and there, and you get a very uptempo version of her hit. One thing that this remix shows is that, she her voice needs to be married up with a skilled arranger. she could easily could have been a a diva of 60`s and 70`s - and this is, I suppose, a mock up of what this song would have sounded like 40 years ago.

The sound quality isn`t amazing. Not up to my usual standard - but it hasn`t stoppped it being one of the popular uploads from me last year. Download by using the little wee arrow to the right of the audio player.

Single / "Spirit Level" La Machine (12" Punk Rock Kick 1983 Remix)

If you remember the 80`s first hand, and the long summers while playing out in the streets, and 'Turbo' from the film Breakdance, then this is the soundtrack to take you back.

I`ve based it on the 12" remixes you`d get back in the day, where`d a new wave - ish pop element was added to extend the original song.. so don`t be fooled by the intro .. It gets serious!

The Remix is on L.A. Machines offical EP, with super remixes from Seb from the Mighty Moody Gowns. Man, you`ll be surprised how different one song can be!

This is a remastered version, which is not on the official single release.

... Everybody Breakdance.

Hip Hop Albums / MP3 / Download

Hip Hop Albums / MP3 / Download

Hip Hop has become such a parody of itself commercially, that you just know that all the extravagance and the bravado, is all marketed towards the suburbs. That`s why the place to go is underground - and largely outside of the U.S, where `the three arts` - namely graffiti, breaking and rap are still intertwined into one entity and still seen as part of a Hip Hop culture thats relevant today , where in America, the music took off and the other arts didn`t fare so well.

Today, though, we are in Hip Hop`s home turf.if you look past the superslick MTV videos, and go back to listening to hip hop as opposed to watching it, or wearing it, you find the the genre moved on from R&B crossover / Ibiza rubbish that has cluttered the airways for the last few years. It does mean you have to look for it, but after spending most of my youth in record shops - what`s new?

Well, I`m dropping two hip hop albums one post, two producers, one raps, the other doesn`t. One thing these two albums does have in common is, the second track is where the album really starts, and where I`d recommend you start off from too - just to start off on the right foot. Suhnraw, has been at `the game` for awhile, his latest album "Soul" came out this month, but "Tape 2" isn`t a bad place to start. Aeon Grey, also has been about a little while - his first release being in 2007. You got two fellas who know what they`re doing in the studio, but do it in different ways.

"STILL LIFE`S SABOTAGE" AEON GREY - BASHIR.

Producer and rapper of equal qaulity.

"TAPE 2" SUHNRAW.

Violins, Drums, Piano, and a Punk ethic - "Minimal Boom" Very Short Shorts

Very Short Shorts are from Italy, but are based in berlin. They`re a three piece band that consists of violin, drums and piano, who play just about any style of music they like. This Album `Minimal Boom` is a collection of short songs around 2 minutes, full of textures and playfulness ..... and full of rock rhythms. To get a flavour of who they are, watch the trailer for this album which includes a performance of "Nibiru".

MP3 / "Fire & Ice" Galaxians

A super slice of funk. Striped down and live. Just drums and keyboard. Fresh and `just right` right for the dancefloor, Fire and ice gives the near automative feel of a dance track although the drumming is totally live - the guy is that fucking tight! I know these guys and might be hooking up with them in the future for a remix, once their recording schedule gets underway in the coming months.

MP3 / "Milhouse" Sam Keeler

Short and sweet instrumental with an acoustic guitar. no other link to give but his soundcloud page. There`s not much info to give, but this playful little tune is all the information you need to know about Sam. He`s great on the guitar, and is also a dab hand in the studio - as he records and produces his stuff - you do wonder, what is his day job?

Beautiful technique on the guitar.

Single / I Lied to you all along / Downdime

Single / I Lied to you all along / Downdime

Following in the tradition of releasing singles as a simple A/B side, the Downdime single `I lied to you all along` is one of their best. A change with their recording practices has paid off and you really feel the fury of the drums fills in the chorus. It`s no substitute for seeing them live, as they are much, much more heavy on stage and the sheer power of it, considering the emotional content, is amazing.

You get three minute of a good, solid, pop song with fuzz. The louder you can play this the better.

Included is a sneak preview from their forthcoming album, due out in March.

MP3 / Electronic Progressive Rock - Catscans

MP3 / Electronic Progressive Rock - Catscans

A favourite band of mine, that has been through various line up changes, the renaming of the band, and an overhaul of their sound has decided to call it a day and have on friendly terms, disbanded.

I do find it hard to write about music because it`s all about emotions and metaphors, and when you really like something it`s hard to express that in words. How I`d describe their sound, is as a collection of mini soundtracks, perfect when for when you`re on your own. There`s a feeling of intimacy that comes out in the writing of the music and that warmth is expressed fluently by the collective of musicians that have made up this band over time.

When I first started working at the studio, they were the first band that I really `got`. I`m a sucker for instrumentals, and they created some beautiful songs whilst I was working away on the other side of the wall. I got to photograph them twice, the first time with a cameraphone - really high contrast shots, which turned out pretty well - and the second time with an actual camera, this time with the current line up, which is what your seeing now. An absolute joy to work with - thanks for letting me into your sessions.

Watch out for a forthcoming remix of ` Choeung Ek Memorial (Killing Fields) ` .. currenly working on it .. right now.

Here is a full discography of the bands work over the two phases of its lifetime. You can download at any price, including `free` .. that`s up to you. listen and decide.

Documentary / Japan - School Bullies

Documentary / Japan - School Bullies

The japanese school system is regarded as one of the most toughest. Even though we in the west are fond of their pop culture, their art and their electronics and inventions, we are quite ignorant of their social norms and expectations.

The Japanese expect a certain kind of  discipline and toughness from children from an early age -  like making young schoolchildren play outside in winter, barechested. Whilst this would get someone in England arrested - if you saw your neighbour do that to their child, you`d be ring the coppers straight-a-fucking-way - for them, it not only makes the kid toughen up,  it also fosters bonding between infants as they huddle one another for warmth.

The social structures within schools and the society at large that it exists in, exerts an intolerable pressure upon some young people, and sadly, they choose to kill themselves. In this doc, it shows what happens to a family when their child takes their own life because of school.

Documentary / Tiger Parenting in Asia

Documentary / Tiger Parenting in Asia

Tiger parenting underpins a lot of Asia`s success. Japan, China and Hong Kong have competitve educational systems. For a lot of kids, coming home from school is not the end of the day - it usually means more studying and tutoring. This pursuit of excellence and perfection can cause young people to become stressed, or depressed. In some unfortunate cases, people take their own lives.

This doc, focuses on the Hong Kong school system,  how the kids cope with the workload, and how parents and teachers push harder and harder to makes sure their children aren`t the ones left behind.

Rare Photos of Cool people who`ve passed away

Rare Photos of Cool people who`ve passed away

Okay so the title is a bit mawkish.

A collection of rare, but awesome photographs. I`m a sucker for monochrome, it really frames the moment. Especially as with some of the subjects in the following prints are no longer with us, these shots have a certain charm and style that is so seductive to gaze upon, and also a little hint of sadness - partly because there`s a mourning for a time that`s passed and also because you`re seeing the dead in their prime, just chilling out with a friend.

It`s these kind of photographs I strive to take - not of famous people - but of the passing of time. These are works of art, but are powerful documents of their time too. I think you`ll enjoy them as much as I do. There are three colour shots in there - all from the 1970`s - so it`s cool ... I do like colour photography from time to time!

Enjoy.

Art Vs Pop by design - Sally Dige - Immaculate Deception

Art Vs Pop by design - Sally Dige - Immaculate Deception

Sally Dige  is a Danish - Canadian artist and designer, the artist sent me  her latelest video this after seeing my `Sumfink Like Disco" VHS mixtape, and I just `got it` straight away, So much so, I`m going to be working on something for her.

It`s at the demo stage, this particular song, and she has a few snippets of other songs on the net, but I think she`s keeping her cards close to her chest, and not willing to rush things out - which I can relate to, no probs.

Have a listen, and say hey on her facebook page. I`ll be doing a VHS Remix of this, once I have this remix album finished .. uh, ... long story....  2 weeks ripped out my schedule - one week by blocked sinuses (great for mixing down) and then a heavy week at work`s studio meant `eff all` got done... Never mind ..

MP3`s for your Phone - Instrumentals

Words can say so much, but honestly, sometimes it`s better to `shut yer trap`. Nothing can move me like a good instrumental. They come into their own on long journeys, and as I live far from my family, I do this quite a lot. Todays pick of music comes without any lyrics, but full of meaning.

I haven`t been blogging for awhile, so I`m getting as much music as possible out there without giving each artist a decent write up. Once I feel I`ve `caught up` with myself, I `ll slow down and give some meanings behind the choices.

Berlin Krautrock - MP3`s for your phone.

`The best things in life are free` ... it`s not always the case, but in this case, it is most definitely true. Three top sonic offerings from Berlin, from a collective called Toro Camino.  I have a strong liking for all things krautrock, but there`s a certain quality about these blokes that I want to share what I`ve just found today.    My choice of choice are the tracks  `The Green Perch` & `Gameboy vs. Steinway`, it also highlights their talents electronically and their technical abilty on traditional instruments. If you like instrumentals then you`ll get this band straight away.

MP3`s for your Phone - Indie

MP3`s for your Phone - Indie

Making up for lost time, not sharing music and all that. Right now I`m in the studio, two bands have 20 mins left, then it`s straight to bed. Was ill last week and missed days and days of recording. Just before that, having got myself a little stressed about the upcoming remix album and stuff for Apostle, I realised I had more time than I thought and relaxed little. Then fell ill. Damn.

Anyhow, I present some interesting indie ... what does indie actually mean anymore? .... songs, that are fresh as eggs.  It`s a bit dark, it`s a bit surf, it`s a bit pop. Quality is assured.

World in Action (1970) - The Quiet Mutiny John Pilger

World in Action (1970) - The Quiet Mutiny John Pilger

Remember when ITV used to do hard hitting journalism? You don`t? I find it hard to square sometimes that a lot of the notable documentaries of the 1970`s and 1980`s came from channel 3. (That is the official name for ITV)

World in Action was one of the best documentary makers, wound down  and replaced by the fluffy spectacle that  is "Tonight". John Pilger, made numerous films for the Granada - based program, I have found a few on the net, and it`s brilliant being able to share some knowledge and great film making with you.

This is his first film, it caused a major fuss worldwide. This was the first warts and all documentary about  the Vietnam war, with open rebellion on film ..... as the war was happening. We are, as I type, in a endless, worthless conflict - same as back then. It makes watching this video a less passive experience, we are not merely looking back in time, this is the ghost that haunts humanity, time after time. Young men die for old men quarrels.

Another thing that this video demonstrates is how feeble and ineffectual ITV has become, it seems strange to think that it was an ITV program that helped free the Birmingham six, that would NEVER happen how. Sad but true, but then again, remember Rough justice on the BBC?

Once upon a time "documentaries" meant a sober film with no emotion-baiting music to underline each situation, or shaky camera reconstructions. Personally, I feel that production companies have a different take on documentary making than say, a film maker or a lone journalist. As all of our TV comes from budget conscious production companies, you will rarely catch a documentary on TV of substance, and then hopefully it`s on a subject that you relate to...

... enjoy, there are lot`s more World in Action programs about

The Actual Recording of the Purple Rain single - Video footage from 1983

The Actual Recording of the Purple Rain single - Video footage from 1983

The Purple Rain Soundtrack is regarded as one of Prince`s finest albums. Combined with a decent film release, it sold by the bucketload. The final three tracks of the album were live, save for a few overdubs. In 1983, he hired the best sound guys to record a gig, but not telling anyone the purpose behind it.

This video is that performance of "Purple Rain" that`s on the album, the same one you heard on the radio, and a little confusingly the one you hear in the film. (Yup, lip synced  to his own live performance)

the commentary is full of little facts to do with the recording of the song and the performance, and for those who are interested in such things, the edits in made in the studio (remember this would`ve been tape) are all signposted. I`ll not give away anymore info, as I was mesmerised by the facts as they popped up on screen.

It`s great to see the actual recording of a song you`ve always liked. Let`s see how long Prince will tolerate this on youtube..

Alright,

It`s been months sinced i`ve blogged, and I will probably pay the price by having no one read this ... at least for a little while. I have been working on a forthcoming remix album for the Rock n` Roll Circus (where I work) and some other stuff for other people. I blogged for ages about for having writers block, and now that it`s gone I`ve stopped blogging.

I have various unfinished mixtapes and songs that I`m dying to post but there isn`t any point in rushing to get incomplete ideas out to the world, so there`ll be a lot of music flying around in the next couple of months.

For now, I`ll be quiet. However, lot`s of people have been making noises I like so, if you fancy sharing a few tunes with me ...
