Words You Ought To Be Suspicious of: Modernise

WHAT IT`S MEANT TO BE:
You hear it all the time from politicians "We must modernise this department / law / Industry." On paper, the concept sounds great. What it promises is to bring things up to date. Use new technology. Simplicity. Brand new techniques. A fresh new perspective on things. Bah, it rarely is the case. Come on now, How many times can you think of where you`ve sat back and thought - well, it really great how they implemented that modernisation program?
WHAT IT ACTUALLY FUCKING IS:
It means usually job losses, or ripping out one expensive IT system and replacing it with another really fucking expensive one, changing the name of a department of civil service to make it sound snappier and business - like, or merging several departments together for the sake of  efficiency. It can mean something that used to be own by everyone in the land is now sold off to a private company. Then lo, and behold: the person who drove that very legislation through ends up being on the board of that same company who won the tender after they leave the world of politics. Nice work fella! It dares to offer simplicity. What it deliveres is bollocks. Privatisation IS NOT the gateway to modernity. Cutting the funding and making people hit higher targets at the same time is NOT modernity. If you hear anyone offering to modernise something, raise a cynical eyebrow. Then politely flick ciggy ash in their face. It does look cool. Really.
