DOCUMENTARY / WORLD IN ACTION (1988) - A TRIP ROUND ACID HOUSE

There was a time, that dance music was the rebel sound. Not only was it the "evil" music that News of the world and the Sun that adults feared and disliked, but the whole culture around it. Wearing a smiley T-shirt, which was the icon of that movement - put you in the same boat as drug - pushers, (Oh how 80`s does that sound now?) Travellers, gangsters and other social misfits.

I was 14 at the time, and watched the original broadcast alongside my mother, who was utterly convinced it was bad, because everyone over 30 said so. What was refreshing was at the time there was nothing on television that took the balanced view of the scene and of its patrons - and true to form, World in action gives a fairly straightforward (as you can get on evening ITV) of what rave culture is about.

Again, I can`t stress how much how underground this all was, even with rave music chopping the charts - it wasn`t accepted as music, some radio Dj`s derided it ..

It is really depressing to think this used to be the standard of ITV journalism.

(I`ve just remembered during a school holiday in Wales in 1988 when the coach driver refused to play "House Nation" on the coach, my cassette was promptly returned!lol! )
