DURING A HOT SUMMER, BRITISH CITIES WERE FEELING THE HEAT
ANGER SPILLS IN LIVERPOOL, LONDON, BIRMINGHAM, LEEDS
IN LIVERPOOL, £30 MILLION IS SPENT ON A PARK TO REGENERATE THE AREA
WHAT HAPPENED NEXT TO LIVERPOOL 8?
Years of frustration fueled the riots of 1981. The lack of opportunity as England`s industrial era waned, the "sus" laws - which meant a copper could stop you - they didn`t need to have a good reason, just suspicion was enough, the rough treatment that black youths in particular got from the police, and the total alienation from society that young people - black and white - felt at the time.
This 10 minute program focuses on the town after the politicians have gone, the park that was created to breathe life into area is now open - attracting people from overseas .. but has it done anything for the local population?
There a some pictures from the riot here, and the Big Issue has a feature on it that is handy to read if this bit of British history is not familiar to you. Also worth reading is Steven Kelly`s account who covered it for Granada Television, who are the makers of this programme, a Flckr page of photographs by Horner Sykes ... and northern heckler who has a interesting post on what he remembers at the time being a young lad in 81.
