REMIX / La Machine - "SYMPTOMATIC" - (PUNK ROCK KICK DISCO DUB)

LA MACHINE FACEBOOK / BANDCAMP / TUMBLR / TWITTER .

Right, got some new music for you ... and this time it`s me who posting some dance music on my own music blog - and there will be more in 2012 !... but not necessarily `dance`....and not like this!

You can get the MP3 from the bands EP (Left) which I thoroughly recommend. It is proper sharp! It`s a Leeds UK partnership, with a midland connection too, and our third time `working togther` .. if you get what I mean!

Had fun working out the bass to this. Hope you have fun dancing to it, you can`t top music for a natural high..

SINGLE / Kooley High - "City Life"

SINGLE / Kooley High - "City Life"

Laid back style of Hip Hop. The rhyming is professional, and the production sweet.

You know when you`ve been looking for some decent Hip Hop, and you look overseas and you give up .. it`s like one big corporate party in the U.S right now, too close to pop to be culturally relevant to me .. and then, whilst looking for some acoustic music - I find this song.... and this tune here, is faultless.

Sometimes the groove is good, but the rapping is bad, or the voice doesn`t fit, or you plain just don`t believe in what the cat`s got to say.

No no, this passes all the tests I throw at hip hop and a bit more. I don`t care that it`s two years old. It`ll be fresh everytime I play it, so as soon as the sun comes out I shall be throwing open the windows and booming this out.

Sorry neighbours!

DOCUMENTARY / WORLD IN ACTION (1988) - A TRIP ROUND ACID HOUSE

DOCUMENTARY / WORLD IN ACTION (1988) - A TRIP ROUND ACID HOUSE

There was a time, that dance music was the rebel sound. Not only was it the "evil" music that News of the world and the Sun that adults feared and disliked, but the whole culture around it. Wearing a smiley T-shirt, which was the icon of that movement - put you in the same boat as drug - pushers, (Oh how 80`s does that sound now?) Travellers, gangsters and other social misfits.

I was 14 at the time, and watched the original broadcast alongside my mother, who was utterly convinced it was bad, because everyone over 30 said so. What was refreshing was at the time there was nothing on television that took the balanced view of the scene and of its patrons - and true to form, World in action gives a fairly straightforward (as you can get on evening ITV) of what rave culture is about.

Again, I can`t stress how much how underground this all was, even with rave music chopping the charts - it wasn`t accepted as music, some radio Dj`s derided it ..

It is really depressing to think this used to be the standard of ITV journalism.

(I`ve just remembered during a school holiday in Wales in 1988 when the coach driver refused to play "House Nation" on the coach, my cassette was promptly returned!lol! )

DOCUMENTARY / Commercial Breaks - The ZX Spectrum Game that Sank a Company. (1984)

DOCUMENTARY / Commercial Breaks - The ZX Spectrum Game that Sank a Company. (1984)

How one game killed one company.

Way back when the games Industry was in its infancy, there were many UK software houses. Many were filled with self taught once - were - bedroom programmers. Many became highly successful and highly profitable.

This Doc focuses on Imagine and ocean software and a particular game for the spectrum called "Bandersnatch" It`s a great bit of historic video, and fascinating to watch because the company Imagine, folds within 18 months of its birth..... and we get to see it. What should`ve have been a regular BBC documentary on how a game gets from the drawing board to the shops, turned into the slow death of a company captured on film.

The Culprit? the very game we see being coded. it becomes more expensive the more work that goes into it. It was marketed well ahead of its release,

The Game is so advanced that it needs to be purchased with various stuff that has the required chips to run the game - quite new back then - and look how we `re so used to various peripherals for current game systems today! But this is the early 1980`s. £40 is a lot of paper. Right at that point in time, given the market, making a game more expensive than usual makes for nervous retailers AND parents who are, at the end of the day, are the ones who are going to fork out the money for it.(and it is worth noting that generation did not grow up with computers)

Again, top bit of vintage British life.... and check them haircuts.

(the game resurfaced years later on the Amiga and the Atari ST)

BOOK / "Go The F**k to sleep" - A bedtime story, read by Samuel L. jackson.

Written by Adam Mansbach, this charming little story, may not be suitable for your kids, it`s not going to send you to sleep. Born from a facebook update when the authors daughter took all night to doze off, this book has been a massive hit on Amazon. When Samuel L jackson narrated the audiobook - things really took off. This is just a little trailer for the audiobook, but ....you will fucking love this, trust me.

If you hunt around t`net, you`ll find some tasty remixes and mashups. But the one thing that caught my eye, was a video of a grandmother reading it to her grandson. That`s what I`ve included here. Please be my guest, laugh your ass off - just remember to wipe afterwards.

Music Documentary / Moog - The Inventor of the Synthesizer

Music Documentary / Moog - The Inventor of the Synthesizer

Moog is such a respected name in the field of music making. It`s special as most electronic instruments that become iconic, tend to stay iconic within the genre of electronic music production - like the 808 for example. Moogs, however have a soft spot reserved for them by musicians of many genres - over many years. I have a guitar effects pedal which on one preset it`s named "Moogy", when I purchased it initially and looked over the lists of sounds and saw that - I knew exactly what kind of sound it would be - I hadn`t left the shop yet. That`s how unique this particular synth is.... I say synth, there`s a whole family of them. But..

Who`s the Daddy?

Step forward Mr Robert Moog, native New Yorker and engineer. His mum, a lover of music, encouraged him to play piano. His father, with a deep seated interest in electronics would include his son in his experiments. It was a perfect recipe for someone who would grow up to combine the two and inspire generations of musicians to make sounds that are out of this world. Robert always kept a close relationship with musicians, and those who came to love and use his products would also become close friends ( Rick Wakeman, Keith Emerson and John Cage to name a few)

This film, made by Hans Fjellestad and winner of the Sheffield Film Festival 2004 and many others - covers the life and times of the Moog synth, the music it made, the musicians who used it, and the man it made a legend.

Robert Moog died in 2005, just after the release of this film. Shame.

Top Geezer. Thank you.

Music Documentary / Heaven 17 - The Story of `Penthouse and Pavement`

Music Documentary / Heaven 17 - The Story of `Penthouse and Pavement`

This is the tale of Sheffield`s Heaven 17. Two members from the Human League left to form another electronic outfit with a difference.  A detailed documentary covering the background of the members and the story leading up to the recording of their debut album - now regarded as a classic. All the main players except for one are in this film, and the Human League`s Phil Oakey makes a few appearances throughout and tells the story from his side too.  The split wasn`t totally amicable at the time and that spurred on both bands onto success - as each group of people had something to prove.

INTERVIEW / Nile rodgers - The Man from Chic.

INTERVIEW / Nile rodgers - The Man from Chic.

The guy really needs no introduction. Nile talks to PBS host Tavis smiley about his life as a musician and a producer. For anyone who`s a fan of his work, you`ll find a few nuggets of info in this 30 minute programme that will delight you.

For a man considered a `Disco great` he has worked in many other disciplines of music that are million miles away from a thumping 4/4 beat. in fact, until he met Bernard - the other part of chic - he was a classically trained musician who`d hadn`t played anything that could be classified remotely as being funky.

You also get the lowdown on the stories behind albums and singles - and not just his own. Rock music has had the benefit of having its history being detailed in many ways - especially true of 1970`s ... whereas Disco and it`s offshoots has never been inspected in quite the same way. So interviews like these are riveting.

The guy is a legend ( ... and very humble with it too.)

Single / Giant David / "Family" E.P

Single / Giant David / "Family" E.P

The first solo project of Jonny Edwards formerly the lead singer of Catscans. Away are the soaring vocals and faraway places. His tone has become more earthy, and there`s something about Giant David that seems more homely and measured - a shift from the panoramic arrangements of his previous band.

On a side quest to make interesting music with interesting musical instruments, he has created this, a little EP called "Family". He plays every instrument, and because of their unusual (and sometimes rare) qualities of each one, you ears never `rest` - there will be a tone or texture that`s pleasing, but you can`t place what it came from.

Take a wee moment and enjoy.

CONCERT / Various Artists / Reggae Sunsplash Live 1979

CONCERT / Various Artists / Reggae Sunsplash Live 1979

It was the highpoint Jamaican entertainment for years. It started back in 1978, and grew in popularity from then on. It gained an international following, and videos of the festival found it`s way into many homes. I have fond memories of the whole family gathering round to watch that particular years sunsplash (wow, remember when we all used to watch TV together?) and it doubled as a `video postcard` for those from Jamaica who now lived overseas - it was one of few ways of seeing the island (postively) on your TV - so it meant a lot of things to a lot of people.

However, it came to an end during the 1990`s. It expanded and changed with the times, but didn`t make much profit. A good deal of money was generated by hosting Sunsplash, but the organisation itself did not see much of it. Hotels and other businesses thrived from the extra tourism that it brought into the country, but as for poor old Sunsplash, it got itself into deeper money problems.

Further legal wranglings and the death of two of the four founders of the festival has meant that the future of the event remains in limbo. In 1996 the show ended, with a brief return in 2006 which didn`t fare so well. However, a spin off from the festival that tours all over the world still operates.

Concert / DEVO / Freedom of Choice Tour - Phoenix Centre 1980

Concert / DEVO / Freedom of Choice Tour - Phoenix Centre 1980

Pioneers DEVO, who brought art to music and were one of the first to embrace the music video are featured (in full) in concert Petaluma, California in 1980.

It`s hard to quantify just how unique these guys were at the time. The sound of the synthesised music was pushing boundaries in itself - then along come Four looking like spacemen, who weren`t pretending to be spacemen. This is 1980. It`s still technically the 1970`s culturally, with disco still hitting the charts and people wearing the same clothes they bought in 1979. Brightly coloured DEVO with their sharp new wave sound caused enough kefuffle to hit the mainstream. Even embracing the video format as they did in the early 80`s wasn`t common. Thankfully they recorded this gig, it`s choreographed to to a tee. Mint.

Here`s The Setlist from the gig:

Freedom Of Choice Theme
Whip It
Snowball
It's Not Right
Girl U Want
Planet Earth
S.I.B. (Swelling Itching Brain)

DOCUMENTARY / Blondie - "Heart Of Glass" Making of Audio Documentary

A Ten minute doc of the story of this iconic song, which focuses on the studio techniques used which were new to the band, and how the song itself changed from a breezy uptempo track to a Studio 54 stomper.

Single / "Cop Car" / HeyPenny

Single / "Cop Car" / HeyPenny

Quirky, mad as a box of frogs and delicious to listen to. Released back in 2009 (wow, time is just flying by) this sounds like a song that was fun to create. It`s certainly hard to pigeonhole. I get a lot of 80`s - like vibe from it, but it isn`t actually a pastiche - it just instantly reminds of what was on the radio in the early 80s.

For a change, I`ve provided the lyrics ... I think they`ll become handy!

LYRICS

Somethin that I heard today saw ‘em up on the stage okay
Punkin & Rockin all alone did they say
Somethin in the way they did all of their musical ami-mid
Movin and slippin all across, the main stage
Well I fell I fell for it bad, but you should’ve seen their dad they
Cut the corners off and then they
Rolled that big ol’ box off the hill they really did it for real
And when it landed soft, they said, “Hey…”

I’m a COPCAR baby you are CANDY ANNIE

Uh uh don’t you dare do that
Uh uh I will rat-tat-tack
I will deliver you to my hands who
Wanna bang bang plain plain yellow apples from the tree
Look at me I am free to hit you
There was a crash and a bang he started havin some pain
He’s shakin everything, let him go
This jittery boy on display is just observing the play
And he can take command of the show…
